Our Programs

Our purpose is to raise mankind’s awareness of his vital partnership for survival with the natural world, and, through effective education and conservation activities, to bring workable, down-to-earth solutions to environmental challenges.

One key aspect of The Earth Organization which sets us apart is the understanding that, for a solution to truly be a workable, long-term answer, it must address and benefit by far the greater number of elements involved in any situation, including Mankind’s global expansion, commerce, industry, people, jobs, other plants and animals, etc; not just a single part of the problem or a particular species.  We investigate to find the real source of a problem and focus on the resolution of that, thereby ensuring the reversal of a decaying situation.

We currently have 9 chapters around the world:  South Africa, USA, Canada, Hungary, France, Ghana, Gambia, Italy and Cameroon.

The following are examples of some of the key projects we have completed or are currently working on:

NEW ORLEANS TOXIC CLEAN UP CAMPAIGN:  We completed a campaign to bring thousands of gallons of a cutting-edge, environmentally friendly, non-toxic solution into Louisiana and Mississippi, after Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.  We sprayed houses, churches, a hospital, and schools to decontaminate them from the ravages of mold, and to clean the polluted water and soil. We donated enough of the product for over 33,000 homes and their surrounding areas to be cleaned of toxins.  We then trained teams of workers and other local environmental and disaster relief groups on its use and effectively turned the campaign over to them.

ENDANGERED RHINO RESCUE:  There are 5 species of rhino in the world.  One of them, the Northern White Rhino, only lives in one place in the wild: the Garamba National Park in the Congo.  3 years ago there were 1200 left; 8 months later there were 34 left; a year later, they were down to 4.  In September of 2006, Lawrence Anthony flew to the Sudan where peace negotiations were being conducted between the rebel forces (called the Lords Resistance Army, LRA) and the Ugandan government and UN representatives.  The LRA fled into the Congo the previous  year and were responsible for the demise of the rhino.  Lawrence felt that if he had a chance to talk to the rebel leaders, he might be able to convince them to stop killing the local Game Rangers, as well as the rhino.  During those negotiations he found that the rhino was a spiritual “totem” to them and that they thought there were other herds in other places.  They were honestly distressed to realize that they had killed the entire species down to this level.  By the time he left, Lawrence had obtained from them, as part of the written UN peace treaty, their agreement to stop killing the game rangers, and to start protecting the rhino, and Lawrence and The Earth Organization gained wide international recognition in the press for our extraordinary efforts.

ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATIONAL CURRICULUM FOR SCHOOLS: We have created an environmental curriculum which for Kindergarten through 12th grades in public and private schools, and after-school programs. These courses improve a student’s ability to think critically while helping them develop knowledge to deal with important environmental topics that affect their lives.

ENVIRONMENTAL ESSAY CONTESTS:  An Environmental Essay Contest for Junior High and High School students is being conducted in public school districts in southern California, and in coordination with the Clark County School District in Nevada (the 5th largest school district in the US).

The Grand Prize winners will receive a one-week educational Eco Safari to an exclusive game preserve in South Africa for themselves and their parents.  Next year the contest will be conducted nationally.

ECO SAFARIS TO SOUTH AFRICA:  We are conducting educational safaris for adults to Thula Thula, a private game preserve in South Africa.  The attendees have extraordinary opportunities to enjoy and learn about the wildlife and local Zulu culture, in addition to educational seminars regarding global environmental situations and their solutions, including what each person, individually, can do in their daily lives and in their businesses to become part of the solution rather than part of the problem. The accommodations are luxurious; the wildlife abundant; and when he is in residence, the participants have an opportunity to meet and spend time with our founder, Lawrence Anthony.  With a bit of luck, they may even see the extraordinary relationship between Lawrence and a herd of wild African elephants, so remarkable that CNN, BBC, and a number of other major media have come there to film him with them.

UNITED NATIONS RESOLUTION TO PROTECT WILDLIFE:
We are currently embarked on an international campaign to get accepted by the UN a formal resolution we wrote and submitted to them which would make places in war zones where there are caged wildlife (reserves for endangered species, zoos, veterinary clinics, etc., considered as non-military targets in the same classification as churches, schools and hospitals.   Participating in this campaign with us, we have the 160 finalists of the 2008 Miss Earth Contest, held in the Philippines, dedicated to working with their country’s UN representatives to help get this resolution formally accepted by the UN.

TEO & At Risk Youth TEO & At Risk Youth ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS FOR YOUTH IN COURT-ORDERED POLICE PROGRAMS:   These workshops raise children’s awareness of how pollution and littering affect wildlife in their areas and raise their interest in and understanding of why it is important to take better care of their surroundings.  Where possible, they include a field trip to an exotic animal rescue facility, presentations on the effects of waste improperly handled on animals and themselves, and a neighbourhood trash pick-up.  We have excellent feedback from the participants, as well as the police, regarding the effectiveness and impact of the program related to getting the students more aware of their environment and raising their interest in helping to make it better.  Our success has led to us just being invited to participate in other similar police programs in Los Angeles County.

WASTE MANAGEMENT EVENT IN BLACK SETTLEMENT:  A large event was just held in one of the impoverished black settlements in the greater Durban, South Africa area. The goal was to improve the health of the local peoples by educating them regarding the proper handling of pit latrines and the importance of looking after the environment. The event was a huge success with a large number of people introduced to a cutting-edge, highly effective organic microbial liquid that is the perfect, inexpensive solution for waste management, naturally sanitizing waste and getting rid of foul odours.  This information was enormously appreciated by the local people and led to improved conditions and quality of life.

OUR CHAPTERS:    Our chapters are involved in a variety of environmental projects: tree planting and reforestation, beach cleanups, conferences, supporting other worthwhile environmental groups and their projects.
